AI Agents Explained – Systems, Providers and What Businesses Need to Know

Just two years ago, artificial intelligence for most businesses meant a chat window where you type questions and get answers. That has fundamentally changed. Today, there are AI systems that independently execute tasks, carry out multiple steps in sequence, interact with existing tools, and deliver results without a human triggering every single step. These systems are called AI agents. And they are changing how businesses work with technology, faster and more profoundly than most expected.

This article provides a current overview of the most important AI agent systems, shows how rapidly the market is evolving, and explains the pricing models of the major providers, both for individuals and for businesses.

What sets AI agents apart from chatbots

A traditional AI chatbot answers a question and waits for the next one. An AI agent goes further. It receives a goal, breaks it down into sub-tasks, decides which tools to use, and works through the result autonomously. That can mean the agent researches on the web, creates or edits files, writes and tests code, prepares emails, or synchronises data between systems.

The key difference is autonomy. While a chatbot waits for each individual input, an agent can work through a task across multiple steps on its own. It plans, executes, checks its result, and corrects itself when needed. This makes AI agents particularly interesting for recurring, multi-step tasks that previously required manual work.

The major providers and their systems

The AI agent market has consolidated dramatically in the first half of 2026. Every major technology company now has its own agent products, and development cycles keep getting shorter. What is current today may already be outdated in three months. Still, it is worth looking at the key systems because they illustrate the different approaches the market is pursuing.

OpenAI – ChatGPT and Codex. OpenAI remains the most recognised name in the AI market. ChatGPT has evolved from a simple chatbot into a comprehensive work platform. With features like Agent Mode, Deep Research, and Codex, OpenAI now offers tools that independently research, write text, create code, and execute complex tasks across multiple steps. Codex is the specialised coding agent that can act as an autonomous software developer, receiving a task, writing code, testing it, and delivering the result.

Anthropic – Claude, Cowork and Claude Code. Anthropic positions Claude as the agent for professional knowledge work. Claude Code is a terminal-based agent for developers that works directly from the command line and can autonomously handle code projects. Cowork is its desktop counterpart for non-developers, an agent that manages files, researches, creates documents, and interacts with external services. What sets Anthropic apart is the focus on safety and reliability: the systems are designed to work in a controlled and traceable manner rather than maximising autonomy at the expense of predictability.

Google – Gemini. Google integrates its AI deeply into its own ecosystem. Gemini works as an agent within Google Workspace, across Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Calendar. For businesses already on Google Workspace, this is a meaningful advantage because the agent is available directly in the existing work environment. Google also offers its Agent Platform as infrastructure for companies wanting to build their own agents on top of Gemini.

Microsoft – Copilot. Microsoft takes a similar approach to Google, embedding Copilot deeply into Microsoft 365. The agent works in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. Beyond that, businesses can use Copilot Studio to build custom agents that access internal data sources and automate specific business processes. For companies in the Microsoft ecosystem, Copilot is the most natural entry point into the world of AI agents.

Specialised coding agents – Cursor and Devin. Alongside the major platforms, there are specialised agents focused on software development. Cursor is an AI-enhanced development environment with over one million paying users that integrates AI directly into the coding workflow. Devin, which started as an autonomous cloud developer, has evolved into an entire ecosystem: Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf) as an editor, Devin Cloud as an autonomous agent, and Devin CLI for the command line. In practice, many development teams now use two to three specialised agents simultaneously, one in the terminal, one in their IDE, and one for asynchronous tasks.

Which model for which task – the language models at a glance

Behind every AI agent is a language model that determines its capabilities. All major providers now offer a tiered model portfolio: from fast, affordable models for simple tasks to powerful flagships for complex problem-solving. The right model depends on the task, not the price.

OpenAI currently offers the GPT-5.6 family as its flagship, split into three tiers. GPT-5.6 Sol is the most powerful model, suited for complex analysis, research tasks, and demanding text work. GPT-5.6 Terra offers a strong balance of performance and cost, ideal for daily professional use. GPT-5.6 Luna is the fastest and most affordable option in the family, perfect for high-volume and simpler tasks. Additionally, GPT-5.3 Instant serves as the default model available on the free plan, adequate for quick, straightforward queries. For mathematical and logical tasks requiring deep step-by-step reasoning, the o-models (o3, o3-pro) are available.

Anthropic tiers its Claude models across four levels. Claude Haiku 4.5 is the fastest and most affordable model, ideal for real-time applications, simple summaries, and high-volume tasks. Claude Sonnet 5 is the all-rounder with the best value for money: it delivers near-flagship performance while being significantly cheaper and faster. For most business applications, whether text work, coding, research, or agent-based workflows, Sonnet is the recommended choice. Claude Opus 4.8 targets complex, long-running agent tasks and demanding coding work where precise judgment across many steps is critical. Claude Fable 5, the latest flagship, is the most capable model for highly complex reasoning tasks and long-horizon agent workflows.

Google organises its Gemini models into three tiers. Gemini 3.1 Pro is the flagship with the largest context window (2 million tokens), suited for tasks involving large datasets or very long documents. Gemini 3.6 Flash is the fast all-rounder: it outperforms the Pro model on several coding and agent benchmarks while costing less. For the majority of daily tasks, Flash is the pragmatic choice. Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite is the budget option for bulk processing and simple queries.

Microsoft Copilot uses various models internally, currently primarily GPT-5.6 for Microsoft 365 Copilot and GPT-4.1 and GPT-5 for Copilot Studio. Users do not select a model directly; instead, Copilot automatically routes requests to the appropriate model. For businesses building custom agents through Copilot Studio, Microsoft's own Phi models are also available alongside the OpenAI models, optimised for smaller, specialised tasks.

Rule of thumb for businesses: Start with the mid-tier model from your chosen provider: GPT-5.6 Terra, Claude Sonnet 5, or Gemini Flash. These models offer the best balance of performance, speed, and cost for most business applications. Only reach for the flagship models when the task genuinely requires the highest complexity, such as deep analysis, research work, or long-horizon agent tasks with many steps.

How fast the market is moving

The speed at which AI agents are evolving is unprecedented in the technology industry. The global AI agent market stood at roughly USD 5.4 billion in 2024. By 2026, it is estimated at around USD 10.9 billion. By 2033, analysts project a volume of over USD 180 billion, representing annual growth of nearly 50 percent.

What these numbers mean in practice is visible in the product cycles. OpenAI released multiple new model versions in just the first half of 2026 while significantly lowering prices for its most capable models. Anthropic cut the cost of its most powerful model by 67 percent in February and launched a new flagship model in June. Google released a new Flash version of Gemini in July 2026. Microsoft has integrated Copilot into ever more products while simultaneously raising base prices for Microsoft 365.

For businesses, this dynamic means two things. First, the tools are getting better and cheaper faster than anyone can plan for. What is a premium feature today may be included in the standard package six months from now. Second, those who wait too long lose not just time but also ground to competitors already working productively with AI agents.

For context: By 2027, an estimated 50 percent of all companies using generative AI are expected to run agent-based pilot projects or proofs of concept, up from 25 percent in 2025. The fastest-growing segment is vertical AI agents, purpose-built for industries like financial services, healthcare, and legal, with projected annual growth exceeding 60 percent.

Pricing models for individuals

All major providers have moved their pricing structures in a similar direction by mid-2026: tiered plans from free to premium, with increasingly usage-based billing rather than unlimited flat rates. The era of unlimited access is over.

OpenAI (ChatGPT). OpenAI offers four tiers for individuals. The Free plan provides access to base models with tight usage limits. Go costs USD 8 per month, significantly raising those limits but still showing ads. Plus costs USD 20 per month and is the most popular tier, with full model access, Codex, Agent Mode, and Deep Research. Pro offers five or twenty times the capacity at USD 100 or USD 200 per month for power users.

Anthropic (Claude). Claude is available for free in its base version. Pro costs USD 20 per month and includes all models plus extended thinking, web search, code execution, and desktop agents like Cowork. Max provides five or twenty times the usage quota at USD 100 or USD 200 per month.

Google (Gemini). Google cut its entry-level price for AI Plus to USD 4.99 per month in June 2026, the cheapest paid offering among the major providers. AI Pro costs USD 19.99, while AI Ultra runs at USD 99.99 or USD 199.99. Google is positioning itself aggressively on price, offering significantly more at the entry level than its competitors.

Microsoft (Copilot). Copilot Chat is included free with every Microsoft 365 subscription, though with limited functionality. For full agent access, you need a Microsoft 365 base plan plus the Copilot add-on, totalling around USD 25 per month.

Pricing models for businesses

In the business segment, pricing becomes more complex because almost every provider has moved to a model combining a base fee with usage-dependent costs. This makes budgeting more challenging but also offers more flexibility.

OpenAI – ChatGPT Business and Enterprise. The Business plan costs around USD 25 per user per month on annual billing and includes team management, SOC 2 compliance, and single sign-on. Enterprise customers negotiate individual terms with volume discounts, enhanced security features, and dedicated support. For developers using Codex via the API, a token-based billing model applies: input tokens cost USD 1.50 per million, output tokens USD 6.00 per million.

Anthropic – Claude Team and Enterprise. Team licences cost between USD 25 and USD 125 per user per month, depending on the selected quota. Enterprise customers receive custom usage quotas, SSO, SCIM provisioning, audit logs, and compliance features. API pricing for the most capable model is USD 10 input and USD 50 output per million tokens. For most business applications, more affordable models suffice, with entry-level pricing below USD 1 per million tokens.

Google – Gemini for Workspace. Google has integrated Gemini access into its Workspace plans: Business Standard from around USD 14, Business Plus from around USD 22, and Enterprise with custom pricing. The advantage is that no separate AI add-on is needed; Gemini is included in the Workspace subscription. For companies wanting to build custom agents, the Agent Platform offers usage-based billing through Google Cloud.

Microsoft – Copilot for Microsoft 365. Copilot Business costs USD 21 per user per month (promotional rate of USD 18 through the end of 2026), on top of the Microsoft 365 base plan. Enterprise customers with E3 or E5 licences pay USD 30 per user per month. Those wanting to build custom agents through Copilot Studio pay additionally: a capacity pack costs USD 200 per month for 25,000 credits. An important note: actual costs are often higher than the listed licence fees. Connecting to existing systems and configuration typically runs between USD 5,000 and USD 15,000 in setup costs.

What stands out: Every provider is moving away from simple flat-rate models toward usage-based billing. The reason is that AI agents consume significantly more computing power than simple chatbots. An agent working through a complex task across thirty steps costs the provider many times what a single chatbot response does. For businesses, this means the monthly bill depends on how intensively the agents are used. Pilot projects with clear scope are the safest way to estimate actual costs before rolling out broadly.

What this means for businesses

For most SMEs, the question is no longer whether AI agents are relevant but when and how to deploy them. The barriers to entry have never been lower: for USD 20 per month, any employee can have access to a capable AI agent that writes text, researches, analyses data, and automates routine tasks.

The bigger challenge is not access but orientation. Which provider fits your ecosystem? Is Microsoft Copilot the right choice if you are already on Microsoft 365, or is a platform-independent agent like Claude the better option? How much autonomy do you want to give an agent? And how do you ensure that sensitive company data does not end up in systems you do not control?

These questions cannot be answered generically. What can be said is this: businesses that start gaining experience with AI agents now, whether through a pilot project in one department, through targeted use for research and writing, or through automating a specific business process, will have a clear advantage in twelve months over those still waiting.

The technology is here. The prices are affordable. And the speed at which the market is moving rewards those who start early and learn pragmatically, not those who wait for the perfect solution.
